A Great New Dawn of Real-World Robots is Being Driven by Megatrend Pulls and Technology Pushes
In complex engineering fields there is rarely one single breakthrough that changes everything. Robotics is a complex engineering field. It seems reasonable to expect, therefore, that the directions of robotic developments will be driven to a large degree by market pulls rather than particular scientific advances. Mega trends that are inexorable are one source of changes in market pull. We have three world changing mega trends unfolding before our eyes, three that will be around for decades to come, and each of them will pull on robotics. Added to this we now see the fragility of many aspects of our world wide economy. While COVID may be largely under control within five years or so, the fragility of our systems remains a worry and robotics can step up to help in ameliorating many of its aspects.
